Abstinence Makes the Hate Grow Stronger

labour-nhs-reform-513282

After watching the coverage, last night, of Labour MPs abandoning the working and non-working poor – not to mention pregnant rape victims – to the tender mercies of the Tories’ welfare ‘reforms’, I was reminded of a rather amusing tale I heard a while ago.

On the Friday after the general election I appeared on a TV debate alongside former Labour MP for Nottingham South, Alan Simpson. Joining us were one very smug Tory and an academic from Nottingham University.

Alan and I go back over twenty-years and for all my loathing for the party of which I was once a member – and represented as an elected councillor, if you can believe it – I’ve always had a very soft spot for Alan.

As well as being a sincere and hard-working MP, Alan was not afraid to get his hands dirty. He accompanied Notts anti-fascists on a variety of what we’ll call initiatives, back in the days when the far right were very visible and active along the Nottinghamshire-Derbyshire border. He was a man unafraid of proclaiming his left credentials and I have no doubt, that had he still been in Parliament, he’d have been first into the NO lobby last night.

Indeed, should Andy Burnham ever be unfortunate enough to meet me, I rather fancy that I’d paraphrase Senator Bentsen’s deservedly-legendary put-down: I fought with Alan Simpson. I knew Alan Simpson. Alan Simpson was a friend of mine. Burnham, you’re no Alan Simpson.

So anyway; here’s the thing. Prior to the aforementioned TV debate, Alan and I enjoyed a bit of a catch-up. During which he shared with me the following anecdote concerning a local former Labour MP. The story was as follows…

Said MP knocks on a door while canvassing and asks for the resident’s vote. The man proceeds to grill the Labour candidate:

“Did you vote for the Tories education proposals?”

“Dear God, of course not! I’m a Labour MP. I abstained”

“OK. What about their trade union bill?”

“Dear me, sir, absolutely not! Trade unions are vital to a functioning democracy!”

“So you voted against?”

“Well, actually I abstained. There were very sound tactical reasons for doing so. Parliament and the legislative process can be very tricky, you know”

“Fair enough. And on the education bill?”

“An appalling piece of work! Attacking those charged with educating the next generation! Along with colleagues, I abstained.”

“OK, thanks for answering and taking the time to speak to me”

“My pleasure, sir. So can Labour rely on your support?”

“Of course”

“Marvellous. Thank you very much!”

“You’re welcome. Yes, I’ll definitely be abstaining on polling day”

“What? That’s no good! We need your vote!”

“Oh, I thought abstaining was an effective tactic, listening to you? And if it’s good enough for you people…”

[slams door]

No need to labour – ho ho ho – the point. You know what to do when Burnham and his 184 abstaining mates come calling for your vote…

Je Suis Muslim!

hasan's picPhoto by Hasan Hamid.

David Cameron has turned up the heat in the West’s near quarter-century ideological offensive against Muslims.

The Independent reports today that there are to be tougher measures aimed at those Muslims who “…fail to oppose Islamist extremism.” The paper quotes the Prime Minister thus: “People who say, ‘Well, of course I don’t support terrorism. But a caliphate is that such a bad idea?’ Or people who say, ‘Do you know what? Christians and Muslims, we can’t really live together. And suicide bombing [is] alright in Israel, even if it’s not alright in America. “These are unacceptable views. We’ve got to call them out and confront them,” said Mr Cameron. “We’ve got to defeat the narrative of extremism, even when it’s not connected to the violence.”

Of course, the reader will search in vain for similar measures aimed at other faith groups or religions. Demands for white Christian communities to condemn Anders Breivik’s mass-murdering rampage on Utøya were not so much thin on the ground as entirely absent. Indeed, we could reasonably say that Breivik was a direct result of the West’s campaign of politicised Islamophobia. It would be perfectly fair to say, in fact, that Breivik had become’ radicalised.’

It is now a cliché that any acts of violence by individual Muslims or groups of Muslims are automatically designated acts of ‘terrorism.’ Equally, any lynchings, shootings – or fire-bombing of churches favoured by black people by white extremists – are never terrorism; the perpetrators are invariably ‘loners’ who are ‘disturbed’ or suffering from other unnamed mental illnesses. Ditto the white teenagers who shoot up US schools and slaughter children on a depressingly regular basis.

Similarly, the revelation of a paedophile ring comprising predominantly, or exclusively, Muslim men prompts fevered and hysterical commendations of Muslim ‘culture’ (as if Islam is some sort of homogenised group-mind directing the activities of its 1.6 billion adherents) and media commentators endlessly ponder what it is about ‘their’ culture and traditions that predisposes Muslims to child abuse.

The hypocrisy is sickening. There is now, beyond any reasonable doubt, evidence that an establishment paedophile ring has functioned for decades at the heart of British society, involving high-ranking politicians, entertainers and other VIPS. These would be white non-Muslim men, of course. Jimmy Saville alone probably raped and abused more children than every child-abusing follower of Islam in  the UK combined. And we know that Saville was facilitated by scores of other worthies; establishment pals who knew of his activities. As is well known he was a friend and confidant of and to no less a pillar of the white British establishment than Prince Charles…

We can only await the academics, journalists and politicians launching enquires and studies into what it is about white Western Christian culture that produces a desire to rape kids and, if the disturbing anecdotal evidence is to be believed, kill them.

But Christianity, Western neoliberalism, US imperialism can never be the cause of innocent lives lost. Muslims, on the other hand, are guilty until proven innocent.

Cynical political expediency on behalf of the US and its proxies, especially post-911, is the heart of the tsunami of Islamophobia that continues to sweep Europe and the United States. But at home in the UK it’s easily expedited by the legacy of empire and all that that entailed; invasion, genocide, land and resource-theft on an industrial scale and the racist division between them – brown-skinned savages of a psychopathic bloodthirsty bent – and us – enlightened civilised superior white folks.  Who cares about the historical evidence? Islam’s centuries-old civilisation that gifted the world so much in the fields of science, the arts and philosophy? Instead, Richard Dawkins sneering at the alleged paucity of Muslims with degrees.

It’s the sort of mindset that even allows patrician privileged white men to draw a distinction between the methods that they deploy to massacre people and those utilised by ‘them.’ As evidenced by Cameron who, in the same article, referenced “suicide bombs in Israel.” Suicide bombs, clearly, are the sort of despicable tactic beloved of evil Islamic basket-cases while, as anyone knows, a decent white chap will at least have the courtesy of launching napalm, missiles and white phosphorous onto children from the comparative safety of 40,000 feet.

It’s tempting to finish an article like this with the expected condemnation of IS/ISIS/ISIL, call it what you will (although this writer prefers the term Daesh), and to draw a distinction between them and the overwhelming majority of the world’s Muslims. But that isn’t going to happen. No one should feel compelled to condemn such an outfit; it should be taken as a given.

Instead, let’s offer the PM the best advice for the most effective way of heading off the ‘radicalisation’ of Britain’s Muslims; stop the bombing and invasion of Muslim lands. Stop arming Israel and, instead, condemn the continuing Zionist apartheid and slaughter of the Palestinians.

In the current climate we should all stand up and declare: Je Suis Muslim!

“I voted Conservative, to be honest.”

“What??”

She got all defensive then. Like they do.

“Listen, “ I said. “You’re a single mum. In a council house. Living on benefits. With a disabled boyfriend!”

“Don’t say that!” she cried. Visibly cringing. She was a cut-above, you see. She was ‘better’ than that. This wasn’t how she saw herself at all. Most definitely not.

“They hate people like you, for fuck’s sake! They loathe and despise you! The bedroom tax, sanctions of the disabled, ATOS, the list goes on!. Could you even be more a turkey voting for Xmas?”

“They’re only after the scroungers!” she protested. “The chavs and the scum. People who deliberately fiddle the system and refuse to work.”

Two Weeks later.

She’s sobbing now.

“What’s up?”

“I don’t know what we’re going to do!” She cried some more.

Got caught by the Bedroom  Tax, see? And then there was the overpayment of Tax Credits that they’ve suddenly demanded back.

“They can’t do this! We’re decent people! We’re not scroungers and fiddlers!”

And, to be fair, they weren’t.

But then they never are, are they?

It’s always someone else…

Children of Gaza: Gone But Not Forgotten

GAZAPIC2Yesterday, my branch (Nottingham) of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign held a commemorative vigil for the child victims of Israel’s murder-spree on the Gaza strip, last summer.

All too often those who die in conflicts around the world are reduced to numbers. Stripped of their identities and recalled simply, if they are recalled at all by anyone outside their families, as a faceless statistic.

We couldn’t let that happen. Instead, our members read out the names and ages of all the five hundred-plus children slaughtered as Israel piled war crime upon war crime when it bombed the most densely-populated land mass on earth.

Please take a few minutes to read the list and reflect. Imagine that one of these children was your child. When you’ve done that, don’t stand idly by. Join us and help bring an end to the oppression and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people. Apply here or get in touch with your nearest branch.

Subterranean Tube Strike Blues

So you sneer and castigate the unemployed. They’re scroungers, you say. They should get off their arses and work, you insist.

So they do. They find jobs and some of them become, ooh let’s say, tube workers.

Then you bitch and whine that they’re earning more than you. That nurses should earn more. That firefighters should earn more. That you should earn more.

Yes, nurses, firefighters, cleaners, dinner ladies, carers should definitely earn more more than they do. But you? You in the private sector, constantly bitching about how bad you’ve got it while shitting all over anyone who dares to protect their job and wage?

Well, here’s the news for today, pal. Tube workers earn what they earn because they don’t spend their time whining about the unemployed and bitching about the poor.

They earn more than you (although not the ridiculously inflated sums the Tory press would have you swallow) because they stick together, organise collectively, support their trade union and fight to defend their jobs, terms and conditions.

In short, they have what you don’t because they have the spine and the guts to fight for it and to defend it.

You want to earn a reasonable living? You want what RMT members have? Then support them. Support all workers defending their jobs and pay because that benefits all of us, you included.

And then maybe you could grow a pair and fight for what you think you’re worth.

God forbid, you should ever find yourself deep underground, buried under twisted metal and dust-covered rubble, cowering in mortal fear of another bomb, that you should be pulled to safety by a “greedy” “militant” RMT worker, “holding the capital to ransom” because that would be just too ironic, wouldn’t it?

Now piss off. You make me sick to the pit of my guts.

Fae the Bookworm

faebook4Books are, obviously, important. Very important. They are the staff of life. From the time my auld man taught me to read I’ve been hooked. And as well as finishing at least one or two books every week without fail, I write the things myself now.

Even more important to me, though, than books is my granddaughter. So it was perfectly natural for me to want to share the thing I love most, with the child I love most. I’ve been buying Fae books since she was about three months old. Too young, right? After all, she isn’t going to have a clue what they are or what to do with them. Well, maybe…

My dad always had a thing about not assuming what kids could and couldn’t take in, at any given age. His reasoning was no one could possibly know what a child could or couldn’t understand so best to expose them to as much as possible and see what sticks. That has always seemed like a sensible approach, to me. No baby-talk for the auld man; he spoke to me using exactly the same words he would use with an adult. Consequently, I recall when in primary 5 positively unnerving my teacher when I told her the longest word I knew was antidisestablishmentarianism and that I could spell it accurately, too. The advantages and benefits of literacy and an extensive vocabulary are so many and so apparent as to render entirely redundant the need to argue for them.

Of course, not everyone enjoys reading, words, language, books etc. It’s also very important, I think, not to force your likes and dislikes onto children; to try and turn them into your own mini-me. Fae might well turn out to be one of those people who doesn’t care for books. But I doubt it, on the evidence so far.

From about five months, when she was hurtling around in a walker, she’d point to the top shelf of one of my bookcases where her small collection was stored, indicating that she wanted them. I’d bring them down and she’d perch happily on my lap as I’d read to her. Often, she’d take them from me and just turn them over, turn the pages as best she could and examine them closely, looking at the front and back covers. It seemed that she viewed them as simply different toys. Which was fine by me. If she viewed books as toys, as things to play with, then, I reasoned, she was associating books with fun. With pleasure. As an enjoyable way to spend one’s time. That’s got to be a good thing.

I soon cleared one of my floor-level shelves for her books so she could access them herself, any time she wanted. And now, every time she visits, without fail, she’ll head for her shelf and stagger over to me with one of her books. And then repeat the trip until I have all of them, spread all over my lap and the arms of my chair. At which point she’ll hold her arms out to me, demanding I lift her up into my chair. Whereupon we read and lose ourselves in her books.

Objective peer-reviewed studies have shown her to be the most intelligent child in the entire span of recorded human history and I reckon she’s got the book-bug. And while it’s gratifying to be able to give my granddaughter anything that makes her happy, it’s as nothing to the sheer joy she gives back to me, a thousand-fold, every time she clambers on to my lap with a book.

Happy Birthday, Fae Iris Paterson

faebirthGood morning, gorgeous. You’re now one year old. And what a year it’s been. Easily one of the happiest of my life and, judging from your near-permanent smile, a pretty good one for you too. If this granddad has anything to do with things that situation will be a constant.

I want to share a couple of things with you. A bit of background, if you like. Some context into which you can place yourself, on this, the glorious anniversary of your birth (church bells peeled and trumpets just sounded as I wrote that, by the way).

You’ll hear things about me, as you grow older. You’ll hear about how grumpy, how hard-line and angry your granddad used to be. And while you’ll struggle to reconcile that with the soft-as-grease bag of doting blubbering goo you know, it is true.

You see, being a parent, as distinct from a grandparent, is one of the toughest jobs anyone can ever do. When your auld man was born your G-maw and I didn’t have a pot to piss in nor a window from which to throw it. The first four years of his life unfolded against a backdrop of grinding poverty. While we always shielded him from the material effects of that deprivation – he always had nice clothes, a full belly and a warm bed, not to mention lots of toys and books – we couldn’t do much about the less tangible effects.Faebirth2

We lived on a run-down estate with some great neighbours, many of them also young parents struggling to make ends meet and give their children a good life. Sadly, it was our bad luck to live opposite a drug dealer and the used syringes outside the front door were the least of our worries. There was the constant noise and slamming door as his customers and – we’ll call them – business associates came and went. Your dad was cooped up in the flat until one of us could go outside and watch him like a hawk. No private garden in that residential paradise, you see.

I worked for a local newspaper, at the time, and the pay was barely subsistence-level scratchings. I’d eat once every twenty-four hours so we could save the good food for your dad. I’d get up every morning and load up the deep fat fryer with processed junk from Farm Foods and that’d be it until 6.30am the next day. When I got paid each month G-maw would pay the bills and then we’d scrape by on a tenner a week family allowance until the next pay-day.

Of course things improved, over the years, but often it felt like exchanging one kind of jail for another. When your uncle James was born, for example – by which time Auntie Lorna had also arrived – I was working twelve-hour shifts, six days a week in a textile factory. On the seventh day, I’d do two eight-hour shifts so I could manage the transition from backshift to dayshift.

G-maw brought our three kids up virtually single-handed, as well as squeezing in cleaning and nursing gigs when she could get them. Whenever I was around, your auld man experienced a stressed and angry father; more concerned with discipline and right and wrong than allowing himself to reveal the love he had for his children.

For all that, he and I are great pals and always have been. Despite a laid-back attitude that renders him almost horizontal, on occasions, and a sense of humour and level of maturity more commonly found on an episode of Bo Selecta, he’s a great son and a father who is avoiding the mistakes I made.

Aye, your poor auld dad got the rough end of the stick. Our first child and all the stress, worry and insecurity that inexperienced parents go through, was his lot in life. A long time ago now, of course, and these days we’ve got the extra quid or two, nearly twenty-five years of hard-learned lessons and the relaxed and confident demeanour of Vietnam veterans. North Vietnamese veterans, of course.

Which brings us to you. A year ago today, when your dad handed you to me and I first laid eyes upon you, it felt like a damn had burst. Tears poured from my eyes and I knew, right then and there, that something had changed inside me forever. I could actually feel the anger and frustration of all those hard years washing away.

You’ve changed me for the better, kid, and I love you with all my heart and soul. I don’t have the worry that your mum and dad do. I’ve done my hard-time at the parental coalface and now I can just indulge myself, and you, and enjoy every second we spend together. And, oh boy, I do. 10574286_10152566064602114_7986575462980402822_n (2)

They say one of the best things about being a grandparent is that you can give the kids back to the parents when you’ve had enough. Well, that’s a feeling we’ve yet to experience; we never want to give you back. In fact, I thought we ought to give you your own front door key but G-maw pointed out that you can’t actually reach the lock yet. Maybe next year then.

Have a brilliant birthday, Fae. But more importantly have a brilliant life and never forget; G-maw and I are always in your corner, right or wrong. While ever I have breath in my body I am there for you. No matter where you might find yourself, no matter what troubles you face, you are never alone. Hugs, advice, love, time, grub, a few quid when you need it and dragons slaying. That’s a granddad’s job. And I love my job 😉

Happy birthday, sweetheart xxx
